Bias

This week I've witnessed a powerful demonstration of personal bias, in myself.

I know nothing about biblical criticism. It happened that I started reading a blog post relating to an event in the Modern Orthodox world tangentially related to this phenomenon; the comments provided a lively discussion. On the mere suggestion of empirical evidence for heretical views of the Torah, I felt a significant challenge to my relationship with Torah and Hashem. I am recovering now; I don't know if this is because I'm particularly susceptible to suggestion (which I think is true), but it certainly jibes with what we learn from Rav Dessler et al.

I later went to Rav Hirsch's Collected Writings Vol. V to peruse his response to Frankel's writing on the Mishnah. I'm planning on waiting until I feel on firmer ground in my evolution investigations before I even consider looking into this one. I think rebbe guidance is even more strongly called for here.

  1. Are you actually interested in the truth?

Yes. I also realize that truth is elusive and falsehood is often convincing and/or tempting. This gross over-simplification, plus my relative ignorance, should begin to explain my hesitation to get into this area. FWIW, for the interested reader: On Bible Criticism and Its Counterarguments - I found it a worthy first glimspe.

Not much movement in this area since I wrote this post.

I'd love your input. I'm only accepting constructive remarks that I see as adhering to acceptable halachic standards. If there's any question as to what that means, we can clarify.
